Capital: Jakarta with a population of 9.3 million inhabitants is the capital of Indonesia.

Religion: 88% Muslims, 8% Christians, and 2% Hindus and Buddhists

Official Language: The official language is Indonesian. English, Dutch and Javanese are also spoken.

Climate: Indonesia has a tropical climate. Summers are hot and dry with heavy rains during the monsoons.

Economy

The Indonesian economy was the hardest hit by the Asian Financial Crisis, and recovery has been slow. Indonesia’s major industries include petroleum and natural gas, textiles, timber, mining, coffee, rubber, tin, copper, rice and palm oil.

The average daily cost for a tourist is about 50,000 IDR–70,000 IDR. An average meal costs about 5000 IDR–20000 IDR. Local transport is cheap; however, while hiring a taxi enquire (and haggle) over the fare in advance.
